Founded as a National Park 26 years ago,
Tortuguero is an area of great biological diversity, where 11 different
habitats have been identified, as well as 309 species of birds including
toucans, macaws, egrets, herons and an infinity of other species. Wildlife is
impressive: crocodiles, three different species of monkeys (white-faced, howler
and spider), sloths, endangered manatees, iguanas, lizards, among many others.
The park area extends to 18.947 ha (46.818 acres) on land and 52.265 ha
(129.147 acres) of marine habitat.
We offer daily departure tour
packages from San José. All you need to do is select your preferred
length of stay and we will do the rest! Packages include round trip land &
boat transportation, all meals during the trip, excursions in the area,
lodging, government taxes and the services of a professional guide throughout
the trip.
Besides the tours included on the trip (see Tour Packages for
complete description), there are some optional & extra cost tours that can
be arranged directly at the Lodge:
Turtle nesting tour: During
turtle season from July to September, night tours to observe this wonder of
nature are available. Tour starts at the beach in front of Mawamba Lodge and is
lead by a local guide. Tour length is 2 hours. Please read the "Green Turtle"
section in this site for more information.
Fishing: Fishing is
available in site, upon request and depending on weather conditions. Some of
the fish species you can find in the fresh waters of the canals are small snook
and tarpon, viejas, machacas, among others. The fishing tour includes for
captain, boat for 2 fishermen, necessary equipment and tackle. Minimum fishing
time: 02 hours.
Details:
After an early departure from San
José, we will stop for breakfast at our private Restaurant Río
Danta, where you will enjoy a typical Costa Rican breakfast surrounded by the
sounds of the Danta River and marvelous views of the gardens. Continuing our
way, we will arrive to Matina, our private embarkation point. Before you board
the boats for a 2 hour ride on the canals, you will enjoy fresh water and
refreshing tropical fruits. Once you arrive to the lodge and after a hearty
lunch, the adventure continues!
During the stay, you will be taken out
on tours to the smaller canals and hikes into the lush rain forest of the
National Park area, in which nature lovers can observe the virgin forest, many
species of birds, mammals and reptiles. For the most adventurous, hiking to the
Tortuguero Hill is a must. All of our boats doing trips in the smaller canals,
are equipped with electric engines, for a maximun enjoyment of
nature.
